Morgan Daimler – Irish Paganism

I’ll begin with a quote from tbe book ”Irish Reconstruction Polytheism is about learning as much as we can about  what the ancient culture was like and what the religion was like in order to  bring the core of it forward in a workable modern way. We are not trying to  bring ourselves back or create a backwards looking religion, rather we want to  envision what that ancient paganism would have grown into had it not been  interrupted. By researching and using archaeology, anthropology, history,  mythology, and linguistics we can gain a better understanding of the beliefs  and practices that existed thousands of years ago and find the best ways to  bring that forward in a viable modern way.‘‘

Morgan Daimler explains what is Irish Reconstruction Polytheism, its aspects and also misconceptions. There’s  a chapter in the book about beliefs with information about some Gods and Goddesses (Áine, Badhbh, Brighid, Daghdha, Dian Cécht, Fliodhais, Goibniu, Lugh, Macha, Mórríoghan, Nuadha, Oghma, Oengus, Donn, Manannán mac Lir), Spirits, Immortality of the soul and Cosmology. The chapter focused on practice offers examples of ritual, offerings, daily practices and altars. The part about holidays covers the four fire festivals Samhain, Imbolc, Bealtaine, and Lúnasa.

I especially loved the chapter about magic and mysticism. Not only does it mention different types of magic  workers (Druids, witches, sorcerers) but it also explains their specific magic by looking at Cath Maige Tuired. What fascinates me the most is rosc – spoken spells or chants. They are often seen in battle magic, but they are also used for other purposes (like blessing or sleep). All of the examples and rules of forming a rosc sparked an interest in me to know more. This chapter also includes interesting evidence of  curses in Irish folklore and mythology.

An important part is the chapter about racism and cultural appropriation. It should be normal to learn about another culture, religion, spiritual path, etc. with absolute respect. Especially when you are discovering a new path that calls to you. Find authentic voices and listen to them.
