Are we pathetic or just hopelessly romantic? (poetry)

raindrops caressed my palm
not enough to fill it,
to quench the fire
threatening to consume me

water trapped the grass
like mermaid hair gripped in a fist
unseen depths
trying to seduce me

horizon is so far,
so flat it hurts my soul
field of gold surrounds me
painfully reminding me
it’s all I’ve ever known

sky unleashed its fury
I couldn’t hide,
but I could run
I chose to laugh
